Oil sands mining and upgrading
Oil sands mining involves excavating oil sands using trucks and shovels and transporting it to extraction plants to separate the bitumen from the sand. To separate bitumen from Alberta's oil sands, mining operations transport materials to large processing and upgrading facilities that require large volumes of readily available water for the For over 40 years, Fluor has provided feasibility studies, engineering, construction and commissioning for oil sands projects. Our experience includes greenfield and upgrade projects involving oil sands mining, crushing, material handling, slurry pumping, hydrotransport and bitumen extraction. Currently, 20% of oil sands reserves are accessible via mining techniques. Large shovels scoop the oil sand into trucks which then move it to crushers where the large clumps of earth are processed. Once the oil sand is crushed, hot water is added so it can be pumped to the extraction plant. Environmental impacts of tar sands. On a lifetime basis, a gallon of gasoline made from tar sands produces about 15% more carbon dioxide emissions than one made from conventional oil. This important difference is attributable to the energy intensive extraction, upgrading, and refining process. In situ development, which is generally more carbon-intensive than mining, results in emission rates between 99 and 176 kilograms of CO2 equivalent per barrel. 10 Although there is a high degree of variation, industry average emissions for oil sands production and upgrading are estimated to be 3.2 to 4.5 times as intensive per barrel as
