The Alberta oil sands have been in commercial production since the original Great Canadian Oil Sands (now Suncor Energy) mine began operation in 1967. Syncrude 's second mine began operation in 1978 and is the biggest mine of any type in the world. Suncor is a unique and sustainable energy company dedicated to vigorous growth in worldwide markets through meeting or exceeding the changing expectations of our current and future stakeholders. Suncor's operations include oil sands development and upgrading, conventional and offshore oil and gas production, petroleum refining, and product marketing under the Petro-Canada brand. While working to responsibly develop petroleum resources, Suncor is also developing a growing renewable energy portfolio. Suncor's company-wide production averaged 518,4000 barrels a day in the second quarter, up 3.7 per cent from the same period a year earlier. However, oil sands mining volumes fell about 10,000 barrels a day from the first quarter due to various shutdowns for repairs. Suncor has received the approval of the Alberta government for its Meadow Creek West oil sands project that will produce 40,000 bpd of crude, Canadian media report.
